About Iridium Certus Over-The-Air Updates

About The Iridium Certus Over-The-Air Process

Over-the-Air (OTA) updates are changes to the firmware (i.e., software) that operates Iridium Certus® transceivers. Historically, Iridium has made firmware updates available directly to Iridium Value-Added Manufacturers (VAMs) or with a loader tool to allow for the tethered loading of Iridium® firmware onto transceivers. Iridium has added an OTA method for loading Iridium Certus firmware (i.e., through a remote patch to subscriber equipment) transmitted over the Iridium Network.

OTA updates are important. They may contain security upgrades that protect customers, performance upgrades to improve user experience, and network operations—among other changes. Over the next few years, Iridium will implement major service enhancements to improve performance and expand capabilities within Iridium Certus services; it is imperative and prudent for devices to be upgraded to each release as quickly as possible to accelerate the value of the new network and device capabilities they will be able utilize.
