Conservation & Science

Advancing Conservation Through Connection

Iridium powers the Smithsonian Institution’s Movement of Life Initiative, helping scientists track endangered species and monitor environmental change in the most remote regions on Earth. From the African savanna to the Arctic tundra, Iridium-enabled sensors transmit data that reveal how wildlife adapts to a changing planet.

Beyond field research, Iridium also supports the Smithsonian Monuments Officers Project, aiding cultural heritage preservation, and the National Air and Space Museum’s “One World Connected” exhibit, inspiring the next generation of explorers and innovators.

Exploration & Storytelling

Equipping Explorers to Illuminate Our World

Through a philanthropic partnership with the National Geographic Society, Iridium helps explorers, researchers, and storytellers stay connected wherever discovery takes them. From rainforests and glaciers to deserts and ocean depths, Iridium’s global satellite network ensures National Geographic Explorers can share data, document fieldwork, and tell stories that deepen our understanding of the planet.

Together, Iridium and National Geographic empower those who seek to illuminate the unknown by connecting science, storytelling, and human curiosity through reliable communication.

Humanitarian Response

Powering Relief Efforts in Critical Disaster Zones

In partnership with World Central Kitchen (WCK), Iridium provides resilient satellite communications that keep emergency teams connected when disaster strikes. Whether coordinating relief after hurricanes, earthquakes, or wildfires, Iridium ensures WCK’s field crews can share updates, manage logistics, and deliver meals in communities where ground networks have failed.

Mitigating Space Debris

Award-winning Commitment to Space Sustainability

At Iridium, we’re not just operating a network. We’re protecting the shared space environment for future generations. That means:

  • De-orbiting our first-generation satellites under a rigorous disposal program, helping keep low-Earth orbit clean and safe.
  • Extending the life of our next-gen constellation, reducing launch frequency and minimizing impact to space traffic.
  • Embedding sustainability into operations: from transparency, governance and debris mitigation to enabling Earth-sensing applications for environmental good.
  • Applying the same high standards of reliability and global reach to space sustainability as we do to connectivity. That’s the kind of innovative, responsible approach our customers expect.

Together, we empower you with truly global connectivity while safeguarding the orbital environment that makes it possible.

Space Debris

At Iridium, we believe safeguarding the orbital environment is as vital as enabling connectivity across the globe.

Investigative Journalism

Shining Light on the Lawless Seas

Led by journalist Ian Urbina, The Outlaw Ocean Project investigates human rights abuses, illegal fishing, and environmental destruction on the world’s high seas; areas beyond the reach of law or traditional communication.

Operating hundreds of miles offshore, Urbina and his crew rely on Iridium for secure, mission-critical connectivity. The network enables them to transmit stories, coordinates, and video evidence in real time, ensuring truth and accountability travel even where networks do not.

Without Iridium, we’d be invisible out there, no maps, no contact, no way to tell the story. Connection is what lets us expose the truth.
