Enhanced Short Burst Data (for U.S. Government)

Developed for government users, Enhanced Short Burst Data (ESBD) enables secure one- or two-way messaging with near real-time performance. It offers increased payload capacity, and greater resiliency than Iridium Short Burst Data® (SBD®).

Key Features

  • End-to-end transmission security (TRANSEC) for mission-critical communications
  • Improved payload sizes and capabilities over Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD)
  • Available through Iridium® Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services (EMSS) program

Iridium 9603 ESBD

Our Iridium 9603 ESBD module offers greater security and on-air performance over its SBD counterpart.

About the Module
  • AES-256 encryption: For payload and metadata, including module identifiers and geolocation
  • Increased transfer rates: (messages larger than 70 bytes)
  • Greater capacity: 12x greater maximum mobile-originated (MO) message size (4,095 bytes vs. 340 bytes); 15x greater maximum mobile-terminated (MT) message size (4,095 bytes vs. 270 bytes)*
  • Message recovery: Allows data transfer continuity in momentary radio frequency (RF) signal loss
  • Increased lifespan: Longer battery life means no re-transmission of acknowledged data
  • Use cases: Applications include command & control (C2), remote monitoring, personnel and asset tracking, image data transfer, unattended ground sensors

*Iridium 9603 ESBD only; ESBD service capable of up to 64K payload
