Our Commitment to Privacy

Iridium Satellite LLC (“Iridium,” “we,” or “us”) understands that privacy is important to you and values your trust. This privacy policy (“Privacy Policy”) explains how we handle and protect your Personal Information, such as your name, address, email address, telephone number, job title, job industry, company/organization name, and any other information you provide or any other non-public information that we associate with your contact information and that can identify you as an individual.

Specifically, this Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and otherwise generally process Personal Information in connection with:

  • Your use of this website or any of the Iridium Apps (the “Site”). Most areas of the Site are intended for consumers. Two areas of the Site – Iridium for Partners and Iridium Global Maritime Distress Safety System (GMDSS) – are areas restricted to use by our Service Providers and other third parties. This Privacy Policy describes Iridium’s collection, use and disclosure of Personal Information in both the consumer areas of the Site and within Iridium for Partners and Iridium GMDSS.
  • Your use of our voice and/or data services, including but not limited to GMDSS services, Iridium Certus®, and Iridium CloudConnect (the “Services”). Iridium operates under a wholesale model, meaning that customers subscribe to our Services through one of our service providers or value-added resellers (“Iridium Service Providers”). Iridium Service Providers are under contract with Iridium to provide our Services. Typically, Iridium’s Service Providers directly collect and process your Personal Information and are responsible for how they collect and use your Personal Information. Additional information on their processing of your Personal Information may be available directly from your Iridium Service Provider. This Policy outlines how Iridium collects and uses your Personal Information, distinct from our Iridium Service Providers.
  • Your other interactions with Iridium, including to the extent you interact with Iridium outside of our Site or Services, for example, at events or when you visit our physical offices or facilities.

This Notice generally applies to (1) users of the Site; (2) customers who subscribe to our Services who are anywhere in the world, except in the European Economic Area (“EEA”); and (3) others who may interact with Iridium.

  • If you are a customer who subscribes to our Services and are from the EEA or the UK, there is a specific section of this Notice that applies to you.
  • If you are a resident of California, Nevada, or Virginia, there are specific sections of this Notice that apply only to you.

Your use of the Site or Services indicates your acceptance of the terms of this Privacy Policy. Notices that supplement this Privacy Policy prevail in cases of conflict with this Privacy Policy.

ADDITIONALLY, YOU UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION MAY BE PROCESSED IN COUNTRIES (INCLUDING THE UNITED STATES) WHERE LAWS REGARDING PROCESSING PERSONAL INFORMATION MAY BE DIFFERENT OR LESS STRINGENT THAN IN YOUR HOME JURISDICTION.

 

Children’s Information

This Site and our Services are intended for adult use only. We do not direct any part of our Site to children less than 18 years old and children are not eligible to use our Services. Nor do we knowingly collect Personal Information from children. By using this Site or our Services, you represent and warrant to Iridium that you are at least 18 years of age.

 

The Personal Information We Collect

Our Site

In the consumer areas of the Site, we collect Personal Information when you knowingly provide it to us. For example:

  • In order to use, access, or receive certain services provided though this Site, you may be required to complete the applicable information/registration form accessible on the Site. For example, to receive a newsletter or press release, you must register and provide your name, email address, job title, job industry, and company/organization name.
  • To send a satellite message on the Site using our Services, you will be required to register and provide the number to which you are sending the message, your email address and a message.
  • To inquire about and or purchase certain products, or for technical support, customer service, or sales support, you will be required to provide certain information, including your name, email address, and mailing address, device identifier, as applicable.
  • When you contact us to inquire about certain products or to learn more about becoming a partner, you must provide your name, company name, job title, email address, phone number, the product or solutions you are interested in and the Iridium Service Provider with which you are affiliated, if applicable. In addition, we collect Personal Information when you participate in surveys and/or sweepstakes, or when you correspond with us.
  • When you use our online store, you will be required to provide your name, mailing address, phone number and credit card information.

To gain access to Iridium for Partners (IFP), you will be required to register and provide certain Personal Information, including your name, email address, username and password, mailing address, phone number and extension, citizenship, job title and the Iridium Service Provider. In order to expedite your registration, and for verification purposes, it is possible that we may obtain certain Personal Information about you from the Iridium Service Provider, such as your name, email address, mailing address, phone number and extension, job title, and/or citizenship. Iridium collects the information you provide via Iridium for Partners, including information you provide on behalf of an Iridium Service Provider.

To gain access to Iridium GMDSS, you will be required to register and provide certain Personal Information, including your name and citizenship, and business information, such as email address, mailing address, phone number and extension, job title, and the name of the company, organization or governmental entity on behalf of which you are registering. If you are an Iridium Service Provider, you will also be required to provide certain Personal Information, including name, business email address, and phone number and extension, among other Personal Information.

Iridium is engaged on social media platforms, and you may voluntarily choose to access these platforms or otherwise follow our activities online. We collect the information that you voluntarily provide to us on these platforms, and such information is generally limited to names, online identifiers, email addresses, and other contact information. Please do not post any sensitive Personal Information, or other information that is considered private, on our publicly available social media platforms. Some of our social media platforms use cookie data and automated tracking tools in accordance with this Privacy Policy and our Cookie Policy.

When you use the Site, we may also collect other information, such as your Internet protocol (“IP”) address, browser type, operating system, and host domain. We may also use cookies or similar technology and navigational data like Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) to automatically gather statistical data that helps us improve our Site and deliver a better and more personalized service. For example, we may collect the date and time of access to the Site, the areas or pages of the Site that you visit, frequency and amount of time you spend viewing the Site, and other communication data.

As further described in our Cookie Policy, Iridium may use cookies and other similar technologies (e.g., web beacons, pixels, ad tags and device identifiers) to recognize you and/or your device(s) on or across different Services and devices. We also allow third parties to use cookies as described in our Cookie Policy. You can control cookies through your browser settings and other tools. Our Services

Iridium will collect Personal Information of customers for business purposes in order to perform and provide Services as contractually agreed with the Iridium Service Provider. Such Personal Information may relate to unique devices from which (or to which) electronic communications are sent (or received) (e.g., IP address, Media Access Control (“MAC“) address, Subscriber Identity Module (“SIM“), International Mobile Equipment Identity (“IMEI“) number, Mobile Station International Subscriber Directory Number (“MSISDN”), Serial Number, Unique Device Identifier (“UDID”)), as well as other information about services, including plan type. We also collect data processed in an electronic communications network for the purposes of transmitting, distributing, or exchanging electronic communications content, such as data used to trace and identify the source and destination of a communication, data on the location of the device generated in the context of providing electronic communications services, and the date, time, duration, and type of communication. Additionally, we collect and/or maintain personal information to perform and provide certain Services and to operate and improve our network, including to maintain network continuity. We also collect information used to bill for Iridium Services.

In connection with the Iridium GMDSS Services, such personal information relates to vessels’ unique devices from which (or to which) electronic communications are sent (or received). For example, information such as Vessel Name, International Maritime Organization (“IMO”) number, Maritime Mobile Service Identity (“MMSI”), call sign, fleet name, nation flag, vessel type, SP Owner, vessel information, tonnage, year of build, port of registry, capacity of people, and provider reference (SP Ticket Number), in connection with an emergency contact comprised of identifiers, such as a name, email, and other categories of personal information, such us a phone number.

We may also collect personal identifiers (e.g., name, e-mail address or IP address), or other categories of Personal Information, such as your phone number, from customers or through any of our Iridium Service Providers when you buy one of our Services through them. We use this information for business purposes for example to provide customer support or in the case of a lost or stolen device.

Other

There may be other times that you provide Iridium with Personal Information about yourself or others. For example:

  • If you communicate with Iridium’s helpline or a sales representative, you may provide your Personal Information, such as contact data (e.g., name, address, telephone, email) and/or other Personal Information reasonably necessary for your request or that is otherwise related to your communication.
  • We may collect Personal Information, including photos and/or videos, for marketing, security, and other business purposes. We will collect such information in accordance with the purposes you provided it and with our legitimate business interests.
  • We may collect certain identification information, including citizenship information, when you visit our physical offices.
  • If you attend events hosted by Iridium, we may collect identifying information (such as name and contact information), as well as information to help us maintain safety and security.
  • We may collect certain identification information about our shareholders and investors, including name, organization, and contact information.

 

The Ways We Use Personal Information

We use the Personal Information that we collect for a variety of business purposes when it is reasonably necessary and proportionate to achieve the operational purpose for which the Personal Information was collected or processed or compatible with the context in which the Personal Information was collected, or when there is a legitimate interest, to the extent it does not infringe on any data subject’s fundamental rights and freedoms. For example, we use Personal Information:

  • Pursuant to your consent;
  • To give you access to Iridium Services and to provide and/or make our Site and/or Services available to you;
  • To administer your accounts with us, for example delivering and managing Iridium for Partners for our Iridium Service Providers;
  • For entering into or performing a contract with you;
  • For complying with a legal obligation (e.g., provide our investors with required information about us);
  • To administer and facilitate billing for your accounts;
  • To respond to your requests, assist with customer or sales support, or to process and/or resolve other issues regarding our Site or Services;
  • For marketing;
  • For business communications and updates;
  • To provide you with technical or sales support, including but not limited to identifying and decommissioning lost or stolen devices;
  • To notify you about changes to our Services or our Site;
  • To improve the quality of the Site and Services;
  • To ensure compliance with applicable law, or manage our everyday business needs, such as auditing, administration of our services;
  • For analytics, monitoring and security, and the enforcement of any corporate reporting obligations, Terms of Use, or other policies;
  • To analyze usage patterns in order to enhance the Site and Services, and in some instances tailor them to your preferences. Some of this information may be de-identified and aggregated, and thus not identifiable to you;
  • To help maintain the safety, security, and integrity of our Site, Services, databases and other technology assets, as well as our physical offices and business generally;
  • For testing, research, analysis, and product development, including to develop and improve our Site and Services; or
  • To respond to law enforcement requests and as required by applicable law, court order, or governmental regulations.

Iridium has and relies on legitimate business interests to process Personal Information, such as emergency contact information, in order to provide and improve the Services and network operations. In addition, Iridium may process Personal Information as necessary for protecting the vital interests of the customer or another natural person, performing a task carried out in the public interest, and/or complying with legal obligations.

Pursuant to valid consent provided by you, as applicable, we may communicate with you to provide information that may be useful or interesting to you. Such information may include newsletters/press releases and marketing communications, including contest entries and surveys. You can opt out of receiving newsletters/press releases from Iridium by clicking the “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom of the email. If you are a user of Iridium for Partners and receive marketing emails from us, you can opt out of receiving future marketing messages by modifying the relevant setting in your profile. Please note that to the extent you are using our Services or are an Iridium Service Provider, even if you unsubscribe or opt-out to marketing emails, you may still receive transactional, relationship or service-related emails (e.g., emails related to your transmission of satellite messages).

We may also use your Personal Information to create de-identified information by removing information that makes the information personally identifiable to you (such as your name or email address). We may use these records, and other anonymous information, to analyze usage patterns in order to enhance the Site and Services.

 

The Ways We Disclose Personal Information

We may disclose Personal Information:

  • To contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and third parties who help us make the Site or Services available or who support our business;
  • To third parties to whom you ask us to send Personal Information, including those to whom you send a satellite message;
  • To certain Iridium Service Providers so they may communicate with customers and potential customers, provide and bill for your Services, approve your access to their proprietary information available on Iridium for Partners, or for other business purposes;
  • To a rescue and coordination center;
  • To our parent company, any subsidiaries, joint ventures, or other companies under common control (collectively, “Affiliates”);
  • To our marketing and analytics partners to improve and tailor your experience on our Site and customize our advertising to your interests;
  • To a company that merges with, acquires, or purchases the assets of Iridium, in which case such company may continue to process your Personal Information as set forth in this Privacy Policy;
  • In situations in which you have provided explicit permission to disclose certain Personal Information, for example, in connection with marketing materials shared with the general public; or
  • If we believe in good faith that such disclosure is necessary to: (a) resolve disputes, investigate problems, or enforce our Terms of Use; (b) comply with applicable laws or respond to requests from law enforcement or other government officials, including governmental safety agencies; or (c) protect or defend the rights or property of Iridium, you, or third parties.

 

Updating Your Personal Information

If you have registered at Iridium.com, you may update your Personal Information by emailing us at dataprivacyadministration@iridium.com from your email address on record. If you have access to Iridium for Partners or Iridium GMDSS, you may update your Personal Information by editing your profile. If you send your request via email, please include “[Country] – Privacy Policy Personal Information Update Request” in the subject line. We may not be able to update any information previously disclosed to a third party. Your Personal Information is necessary for us to send you newsletters or other communications or to provide you access to Iridium for Partners. Therefore, if you delete such necessary information, we may not be able to provide you certain communications or services.

 

Security of Personal Information

We have implemented appropriate measures designed to secure your Personal Information from accidental loss and from unauthorized access, use, alteration, and disclosure. We will take reasonable steps to ensure that your data is treated securely and subject to appropriate safeguards in accordance with this Privacy Policy and applicable legislation. However, the transmission of information over the Internet is not completely secure and, despite our measures designed to secure your Personal Information, we cannot guarantee the security of your data transmitted to us through our Site and are not liable for breaches of security or integrity, third-party interception in transit, or any damage caused to you or your company, your computer(s), or other property by accessing or using our Site or Services.

 

Third Party Practices

The Site or Services may contain links to other websites, including those of our partners. Please be aware that we are not responsible for the privacy practices or the online content of such third parties. The privacy policy of a partner listed on our Site may differ from ours. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of each third-party website you visit before sharing your information with that third party.

 

Do Not Track

Some web browsers have a “Do Not Track” feature, which permits you to inform websites you visit that you do not want them to track your online activity. These features are not uniform across browsers. Iridium’s Site is not currently able to respond to “Do Not Track” requests.

 

Retention of Personal Information

Unless otherwise required by law, it is our policy to not retain personal information or sensitive personal information for longer than is reasonably necessary to achieve the purpose for which it was collected. The criteria we use to determine the specific retention period include: the type of data; whether you have provided your consent and have not withdrawn it; whether there are other legal grounds for the continued processing; whether you have objected to the processing and there are no overriding legitimate grounds for the processing; and whether retention or deletion is necessary to comply with legal obligations.

 

Your Representations

With regard to any Personal Information that you provide Iridium, regardless of whether that Personal Information relates to you or a third party, you hereby represent that (i) such Personal Information is accurate and complete, (ii) you have the lawful basis to provide Iridium with such Personal Information, and (iii) you have provided this Privacy Notice to, and received consent from, any third party whose Personal Information you have provided Iridium. If you choose not to provide Iridium with the Personal Information identified herein, then Iridium may not be able to satisfy our own contractual or legal obligations, or delivery you the services or information requested. You acknowledge and agree that Iridium shall not be held liable for any consequence directly resulting from these circumstances. Except for your representations set forth herein, this Privacy Policy does not create any other contractual rights or obligations.

 

Changes to Our Policy

This Privacy Policy is subject to revision from time to time. We will post any revised version of the Privacy Policy on this Site.

Continued use of our Site or Services following notice of such changes will indicate your acknowledgement of such changes and agreement to be bound by the revised terms and conditions.

Additional Information for Individuals in the European Economic Area or United Kingdom

Iridium’s Privacy Policy, supplemented by the information in this section, applies to individuals, including business-to-business contacts such as entities under contract with Iridium to provide Iridium services (“Iridium Service Provider” and together with other consumers “Customer Data Subjects”) located in the European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or otherwise afforded protection under the General Data Protection Regulation (2016/679) (“GDPR”) or UK GDPR.

Iridium is a Data Controller as defined by the GDPR or UK GDPR in its processing of personal information.

Consumer Rights

Customer Data Subjects have the right to request from us access to, and rectification and erasure of your Personal Information. You also have the right to restrict or object to processing concerning your Personal Information, which includes restricting us from continuing to process your Personal Information under certain circumstances. In addition, you have the right to data portability, which includes certain rights to have your Personal information transmitted from us to another data controller, such as to a different Iridium Service Provider. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

To exercise or to inquire about the above rights you can send an email to dataprivacyadministration@iridium.com. Please include “[Country] – Customer data subject rights request” in the email’s subject line. If your Personal information is processed as part of Iridium contract obligations to the Iridium Service Provider, Iridium will coordinate responses to requests of Customer Data Subjects with the Iridium Service Provider. If your primary contact is with an Iridium Service Provider, we recommend that you directly contact the Iridium Service Provider to initiate a rights request. Iridium will work with the Iridium Service Provider to determine the appropriate response to a request. Please note that the exercise of these requests may affect your use of the services that depend on the ability of Iridium to Process your personal data (e.g., your SIM number).

Legal Basis to Process Personal Information

Iridium only processes Personal Information when it has a legal basis to do so. Iridium has and relies on a legitimate interest to process such Customer Data Subject’s personal data to provide and improve services and network operations and the GMDSS. In addition, Iridium may process this personal data as necessary for protecting the vital interests of the Customer Data Subject or another natural person; performing a task carried out in the public interest; and/or complying with legal obligations. Iridium may also process Personal Information with your consent. When the collection and processing of your Personal Information is based on consent (in particular, in the case of marketing communications), you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time.

Iridium’s processing of personal data does not include automated decision-making or profiling that affects the Customer Data Subject.

Where We Process Your Personal Data

Iridium provides its Services from the United States and other locations. By using Iridium’s Services you are transferring your Personal Information for processing to the United States of America, a country not designated by the European Commission to offer adequate protection of personal data. Where your Personal Information is being transferred pursuant to a contract, we implement an approved data transfer mechanism, such as Standard Contractual Clauses, which provide additional safeguards for Personal Information. Iridium also uses appropriate security measures consistent with GDPR requirements.

 

Additional Information for Residents of California: Notice at Collection and Personal Information Rights

Pursuant to the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018, as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act of 2020, (collectively the “CCPA”), California residents may have certain data privacy rights, such as the right to be notified about what Personal Information categories we collect about you, and our intended use and purpose for collecting such Personal Information. This section describes the Personal Information we may have collected directly from you or indirectly about you if you use our Site or Services or otherwise interact with Iridium, and how we have used and/or disclosed your Personal Information. It also describes the Personal Information that we will collect and the purposes for that collection, as well as your rights under the CCPA.

Iridium’s Privacy Policy and the additional information for California residents generally applies to our business-to-business contacts who are California residents, in addition to California residents who use the Site, use our Services, or otherwise interact with Iridium as described in this Privacy Policy.

Note, however, that Iridium provides a separate notice to any employees or job applicants who are California residents.

Purposes for which Personal Information Is Disclosed: See The Ways We Disclose Personal Information, above, which describes the business or commercial purposes for which your Personal Information may be used.

Categories of Third Parties with whom Iridium Discloses Personal Information: See The Ways We Disclose Personal Information, above, which describes the third parties with whom Iridium may disclose your Personal Information for a business purpose. This may apply to each category of Personal Information we disclose for a business purpose.

“Selling” and “Sharing” under the CCPA: As defined by the CCPA, we “sell” and/or “share” certain online identifiers for the purposes of online advertising and analytics. Specifically, we disclose certain online identifiers to advertising partners and analytics providers. We do not knowingly collect Personal Information from anyone under 18, so we do not have actual knowledge of “selling” or “sharing” Personal Information of minors under 16.

You have the right to opt-out of this “selling” and “sharing.” For more information about these activities and to exercise your right to opt-out, please see our “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” page.

California Residents’ Rights Under the CCPA: If you are a resident of California, you have:

  • The right to know what Personal Information the business has collected about the consumer, including the categories of personal information, the categories of sources from which the Personal Information is collected, the business or commercial purpose for collecting, selling, or sharing Personal Information, the categories of third parties to whom the business discloses Personal Information, and the specific pieces of Personal Information the business has collected about the consumer;
  • The right to delete Personal Information that the business has collected from the consumer, subject to certain exceptions;
  • The right to correct inaccurate Personal Information that a business maintains about a consumer;
  • To the extent the business sells or shares Personal Information as defined by the CCPA, the right to opt-out of the sale or sharing of their Personal Information by the business;
  • If the business uses or discloses sensitive Personal Information for certain reasons, the right to limit the use or disclosure of sensitive Personal Information by the business; however, Iridium does not use or disclose sensitive Personal Information in a way that would trigger this right; and
  • The right not to receive discriminatory treatment by the business for the exercise of privacy rights conferred by the CCPA, including an employee’s, applicant’s, or independent contractor’s right not to be retaliated against for the exercise of their CCPA rights.

How California Residents Can Exercise Your California Rights under the CCPA: If you are a resident of California:

Note, we may deny your request in whole or in part if we cannot verify your identity. For requests to delete, we will not delete any Personal Information unless we have confirmed with you that you want your Personal Information deleted, unless otherwise required by applicable law. You can also designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf. To do so, we may require that you confirm directly to us that you have provided the authorized agent permission to submit the request, and even if you elect to use an authorized agent to make a request, we may verify your identity directly with you.

 

Additional Information for Residents of Nevada

We do not engage in any “sales” of “covered information” as those terms are defined under Nevada’s Security and Privacy of Personal Information law. However, under that law, Nevada consumers may submit a verified request at any time directing that we not make any sale of any covered information that we have collected or will collect about the consumer.
