This summer, Auspace and Global Alerting Platform (GAP) tracked teams across the South Australian countryside as they took part in the ‘Take a Breather Charity Challenge.’

The annual event, put on by Asthma SA, partnered with SA Rogaining Association (SARA), promotes awareness of asthma, along with raising funds for Asthma SA’s community services and asthma research.

This year’s adventurous event included a unique Rogaining challenge. Rogaining is the sport of long distance cross-country navigation, involving both route planning and navigation between checkpoints using a variety of map types. The event took place at The Saunders Gorge Wildlife Sanctuary in the historical Sanderston area, approximately 110km from the Adelaide City Center in Australia. Teams of 4 had to make their way across creeks, ridges and farmland choosing which checkpoints to visit along the 35.4km course with the intent of maximizing their score within the time limit.

Auspace provided teams with a NAL SHOUT ts or Iridium Extreme® handheld satellite phone, connected over the Iridium network to the Auspace tracking portal and powered by GAP. Auspace was able to track the teams’ locations throughout, which were broadcasted in near real time to a public website displayed in the Hash House.

“The colour coded public facing website was simple and effective. Glad it went so well – it was certainly fun to watch!” commented Paul Weiss, General Manager at Auspace.

The tracking information not only provided vital location visibility, but also helped teams gain a valuable insight into the distances covered, routes chosen and altitude climbed.

Fifty-six teams and 210 people competed in this year’s event, which raised approximately $40,000 for the Asthma Foundation SA.

Feedback from the participating teams was positive. Many participants stated that the event provided great physical challenge and hope to participate in the future. The participants also appreciated the usage of the tracking devices. One participant, Tim Anderson of Nova Systems said, “It was a great innovation for the event – excellent talking point and informative for those of us involved to compare routes, near check-point misses, etc.”

Richard Prodger, CEO at two10degrees quoted “We were delighted to sponsor this event and raise awareness of this important charity. Without the power of the Iridium global network and our own global tracking platform, this wouldn’t have been possible”

Iridium is proud to support two10degrees and other partners serving communities and efforts anywhere on the planet. Have an interesting story to share? Be sure to submit here.
