I cannot connect. The Apollo Connection Window displays "dialing..." continuously, and the handset does not display "Data Call in Progress".

This condition indicates that the computer and phone are not talking to each other. Try the following:

  • Make sure that your serial cable is securely attached to the phone and computer.
  • If your computer does not have an on-board serial port, you are probably using an adapter. Has the adapter been configured properly? If you are unsure as to the device's settings, please contact the manufacturer directly. (Iridium does not recommend the use of USB-to-serial adapters when using our Data services, especially Direct Internet. Instead, we recommend the use of a PCMCIA-to-serial adapter.)

You may need to lower the Receive Buffer and Transmit Buffer settings.

  • In Windows NT: These settings cannot be altered.
  • In Windows 95/98/Me:
    1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel to open the Control Panel Window
    2. Double-click on System
    3. Select the Device Manager tab
    4. Double-click on Ports (COM & LPT)
    5. Double-click on the COM port you are using for Direct Internet Data
    6. Select the Port Settings tab
    7. Click the Advanced... button
    8. Reduce the Receive Buffer and Transmit Buffer settings to the lowest available setting, and then click OK
    9. Close all open windows
    10. Turn the phone off and then on again and wait for the phone to register
    11. Try your Direct Internet call again
  • In Windows 2000:
    1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel to open the Control Panel Window
    2. Double-click on System
    3. Select the Hardware tab
    4. Click the Device Manager... button
    5. v
    6. Double-click on Ports (COM & LPT)
    7. Double-click on the COM port you are using for Direct Internet Data
    8. Select the Port Settings tab
    9. Click the Advanced... button
    10. Reduce the Receive Buffer and Transmit Buffer settings to the lowest available setting, and then click OK
    11. Close all open windows
    12. Turn the phone off and then on again and wait for the phone to register
    13. Try your Direct Internet call again
