Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services (EMSS)
EMSS is a DoD enhancement to established Mobile Satellite technologies (Iridium) providing low rate voice and data services from a mobile, lightweight terminal. EMSS enhancements to the, commercially available, Iridium services allow for unique DoD features, such as end-to-end encryption, interface to secure telephone equipment (STU/STE), and protection of sensitive user information. DoD has established a dedicated Government EMSS gateway in Wahiawa, Hawaii for government use through the Defense Information Systems Network (DISN). Through this gateway, EMSS subscribers will have direct connection to the Defense Switched Network (DSN), Federal Telecommunications System (FTS), or Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN). In addition, EMSS authorized user terminals (handsets) support secure communications by the addition of a removable National Security Agency (NSA) approved Type I Communications Security (COMSEC) sleeve which connects directly to the EMSS authorized user terminal.
