Monitoring Traffic the Smart Way for Transportation Authorities

Iridium Connected intelligent transportation systems (ITS) used for real-time, efficient traffic management.

iCone® ITS, the Smart Cone

“The data collected from the cones helped the Pasadena traffic department recognize problems that developed and correct them before they got worse. It will also help plan for future events.”

Joe Jeffrey, President of Road-Tech Safety Services, an iCone distributor in California.

  • The Challenge
  • 10-year study by the transportation authorities and highway management community showed an ever-increasing demand for better understanding of traffic flow patterns to improve the safety, security and efficiency of the nation’s highway system.
  • The Solution
  • iCone® Products LLC developed the iCone® instant intelligent transportation systems (ITS) with GPS receiver and sensors powered by the Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) transceiver.
  • Dubbed the “smart” cone, the  iCone is comprised of a GPS unit, vehicle speed measurer, vehicle counter, road temperature sensors and networking capabilities.
  • Data is transmitted by GPRS or by an Iridium satellite link.

Results

At the 2010 Rose Bowl event, the City of Pasadena used the iCone ITS to monitor the pre-parade, post-parade, pre-game, and post-game traffic events allowing them to dynamically reroute bottlenecks and ease traffic congestion. In addition, the iCone that was closest to the Rose Bowl Stadium was unable to use the GPRS modem and switched over to the Iridium modem more than 100 times during game day.

Since its inception in 2008, the iCones have been deployed by various state DOTs nationwide. ITS technologies are intended to help avoid accidents and eliminate travel delays by the efficient use of real-time travel information and traffic management.
