Vital Services for Emergency Response

Medical staff all over Washington, D.C. are now Iridium Connected with critical backup and tracking communications.

MedStar Health

“The Iridium in-building systems and portable handsets will ensure uninterrupted communications if conventional systems are disrupted by a natural disaster or terrorist attack,”

Dr. Christopher Wuerker, M.D., Medical Director for MedSTAR Transport and Co-Chair of Emergency Preparedness for Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C.

  • The Challenge
  • MedStar Health wanted to be able to communicate in emergency situations if landlines were not available.
  • Needed to communicate with and track its helicopter fleet as it provides emergency services to patients.
  • The Solution
  • Iridium provided MedSTAR Health with 165 satellite phones and airtime to administrators in all of the MedSTAR Health facilities in the region, enabling  existing system to be used even when traditional phone service is unavailable.
  • Iridium automated tracking and voice services were installed in MedSTAR Health’s transport helicopter fleet, enabling MedSTAR Health to view the location and status of its fleet and allow helicopters to communicate with hospitals.

Results

MedStar Health has formed the Emergency Preparedness Committee, the Safety Committee, and the Emergency Operations Committee – all working together to significantly enhance the hospital’s preparedness plans.
